Outside the Lines
is a
short animated documentary
in which three young queer people share their experiences on what it's like to deviate from the straight-, cis- norm. Throughout the film, painful experiences make room for a more positive perspective, such as the overwhelming sense of connection with millions of other queer individuals worldwide or the freedom that arises as one can relinquish certain expectations. In black-and-white scenes, this so-called ‘queer-joy’ is being discovered, providing inspiring and moving insights.

'The young filmmaker is not tempted to lecture us with a raised finger. Instead, he manages to give the audience an insight into the emotional world of his three protagonists with subtle and emotionally striking images.
They are given a voice and an abstract space to express themselves, while Oversteegen's sensitive animations stimulate our imagination and invite us to form our own picture of reality.
Through this sensitive interplay between the visual and audio levels, we as the audience can connect empathically with the protagonists. We can immerse ourselves in their stories and get a feel for their attitude towards life - an attitude that remains positive, unifying and conciliatory despite all the resistance.'
